1890s Althof Bergmann Velocipede

$650.00

Here is an 1890s Althof Bergmann Velocipede. It is painted cast iron with composition boy, dressed and hand-painted, 10” tall. For 130 year old toy, I was amazed at its condition, as I purchased it at an estate auction. I have had 2 of the Stevens and Brown version, so am not unfamiliar with them and their construction. The boy is all original with hands/arms flaking. It is my opinion that the pants are replacements as the stitch count and thread don’t match the shirt, and the pants tend to take more abuse because of the motion. All the Althof Bergman’s I have seen has reddish tin mechanism covers, so I assume there has been some pro paint work done. The quality of the iron, the peening points tell me they are old, and the wheels show moderate losses from use. The mechanism has all brass gears and has Althof’s patented wheel-wind activation, unique to this toy. It functioned smoothly. I will label this a partial restoration, that appears EX.
